Music & Memory on San Juan Island
"Alive Inside" brings to life the effect of music on people who have lost their connection to the world. This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music's ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Thanks to an initial viewing at the 2015 Friday Harbor Film Festival, a group of residents united to bring this program to our island.
Our Music&Memory program
Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands, led by Janice Fisher RN-C NHA, has taken the lead in providing Music & Memory resources to its residents as well as the larger San Juan Island Community. Music helps people with dementia-related behavior problems stay off of potentially dangerous medications, and greatly improves their quality of life.
Partnering with Friday Harbor High School and Skagit Valley College students, San Juan Island Library and Hospice of San Juan, the program hopes to bring joy and improved quality of life to many people. Our volunteers complete a 3-session training webinar offered by the national Music & Memory organization, as well as an orientation to general care of residents in a long-term care facility. Additional training in specialized communication is offered to those interested.
In addition to residents of Life Care Center, this program benefits anyone in the community who needs a way to reconnect with happier times in life.
